One of my favorite things to do on a drizzly Detroit afternoon? A coffee and a cinnamon bun at the Renaissance Center. But guess what? The party’s over.

GM pulled the nameplate, the classic cars are towed, and even the salt shakers are gone. It’s closed to the public—locked in perpetuity! Unless you’re a diplomat or checking into the Marriott, you’re out in the cold.

Is this the end of an era for the Motor City’s crown jewel? Or just another door slammed in the face of the people who built this town?
