Poison dirt. Missing paperwork. A disappearing mayor. And a mountain of trouble in Southfield, Michigan.
Charlie LeDuff has the receipts. Or at least the paperwork the politicians apparently hoped nobody would find.
A newly obtained 2021 environmental report identifies 23,000 TONS of contaminated soil at the former Northland Mall site. Arsenic. Asbestos. Cadmium. Selenium. PCBs. A toxic cocktail that was supposed to be hauled to a specialized landfill.
So where did it all go?
Some of that dirt allegedly ended up in Detroit neighborhoods, filling demolition holes paid for with millions in taxpayer dollars. And back in Southfield? Charlie investigates a massive dirt pile still sitting across the street from a PRESCHOOL.
Meanwhile, Southfield Mayor Ken Siver says he was told the dirt was clean. City officials claim they don’t have the records Charlie wants. And state environmental officials reportedly can’t produce the disposal paperwork either.
NO RECORDS? NO ANSWERS? NO ACCOUNTABILITY?
Charlie follows the paper trail from Southfield to Detroit, digs into the city’s redevelopment disaster, and examines the connections to a demolition scandal referred to the FBI.
Where’s the mayor? Where’s the EPA? Where’s the state? And who’s protecting the people breathing this stuff?
The dirt is dirty. The politics might be dirtier.
Watch Charlie LeDuff expose the questions surrounding Metro Detroit’s toxic dirt scandal.
