Deep in the Michigan countryside, an 88-year-old retiree is living in a trailer without running water, electricity, a computer, or internet access.

So how are hundreds of political donations still showing up in her name?

We went back to see Elizabeth Waffle — the woman whose name has appeared on thousands of reported political contributions totaling more than $130,000 over five years, according to federal campaign finance filings.

Waffle says she doesn’t have that kind of money. She doesn’t recall many of the transactions. And now, six weeks after our last visit, hundreds more donations have been attributed to her.

Among the reported recipients? Michigan political heavyweight Abdul El-Sayed.

Are the records wrong? Is there an explanation hiding in the paperwork? And who’s looking out for an elderly woman who may not even know where all this money is going?

We went back to ask the questions. And we’re not done looking.

Because this isn’t just about campaign finance. It’s about accountability — and whether somebody is taking advantage of an 88-year-old woman.
