An elderly woman is dead. Her money is gone. And now, the woman accused of exploiting her is headed to trial.
Charlie LeDuff sits down with Michigan House Oversight Chairman Jay DeBoyer to get into the disturbing case surrounding former Michigan Democratic Party treasurer Traci Kornak, who faces allegations of embezzlement and identity theft involving a vulnerable woman in her care.
But the questions don’t stop there. Why did Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office reportedly decline to pursue the case after receiving evidence? Why was Kornak allegedly given access to an active case file? And why did government agencies watch for years while questions swirled around the woman’s finances?
Now a criminal trial is on the calendar, and a judge has ordered a sweeping forensic review of the woman’s finances.
Charlie wants answers. The Oversight Committee wants accountability. And somebody needs to explain how the system designed to protect the vulnerable may have failed them.
The message is simple: Don’t mess with our old people.
